Stop being a Bossy Taskmaster, Start being a Mentor!

  • Early on in life, I had a great mentor that influenced and molded me in to the leader I am today. He showed me first hand that as a small business owner, we must mentor our employees instead of pilling on tasks. We must support, teach, and grow!

  • Early on in life, I had a great mentor that influenced and molded me in to the leader I am today. He showed me first hand that as a small business owner, we must mentor our employees instead of pilling on tasks. We must support, teach, and grow!

Jay Adelson, CEO of Digg, made a perfect point, "Younger people want a mentor, not a taskmaster. If managers aren't doing that, then the headcount is wrong, the budgeting process is wrong, or the company has tried to create too much efficiency. You'll burn people out."

It's a two way street, you must understand the goals of your younger employees and respond in helping them reach their goals while inside your small business. At the same time, they have to be excited to work there and helping your small business grow. Furthermore, by feeling fulfilled and engaged, they'll be inspired to help your small business crush the competition.

If one of your young employees yearns for goals you recognize that cannot be filled with their current position, you have two choices as their manager, supervisor, and mentor:

    1. Help them find another role in your small business that can achieve maximum results by tackling their desired goals.
    2. Point them to a small business or industry that can help them succeed, provide them with contacts and make sure they succeed their goals later down the road.

Remember to listen, and understand the goals of all your employees. React, support, and grow!
